The III International Poultry Course maps avian pathologies in Peru

The III International Poultry Course maps avian pathologies in Peru

The III International Poultry Course was held on October 20th and 21st in Lima (Peru) with the assistance of students of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, veterinarians and professionals from the poultry industry. The third session of the course, led by Dr. Lilian Chea, focused on: diseases in poultry farms of the Peruvian coast, diagnosis of pathologies, salmonellosis and alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters.

Thus, Dr. David Díez, of Biovet S.A. presented in his master class, entitled “Diseases prevalent in poultry farms of the Peruvian coast: control and prevention”, a map of the main pathologies relating to the climate of the area mentioned above. Dr. Díez began with the “widespread mycotoxicosis, dwelling on the importance of Avian Infectious Toxic Hepatoenteritis in the region, without forgetting the relevant viral pathologies such as infectious bronchitis”.

Furthermore, PhD. Cristina Latasa, of Recombina, gave a presentation entitled: “Identification and diagnosis of diseases in birds: PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) and bacteriological analysis”. The researcher addressed the veterinary diagnosis, the types of samples for analysis, diagnostic techniques and the diagnosis of avian pathologies.

With regard to diagnostic techniques, he distinguished three types: first, conventional isolation and culture techniques; then, immunological and, finally, molecular. It also divided the ways of stablising the diagnosis, depending on the organ affected in: respiratory, digestive and musculoskeletal pathologies.

One of the most specific parts of the course was the explanation by the researcher of the University of Sao Paulo, PhD. Liliana Revolledo, who highlighted the “Latest advances in Avian Salmonellosis”. She argued: “House management and the characteristics of bacteria of Salmonellagenus may favor their transmission and persistence. Therefore, the identification of the risk factors and persistence allow defining the strategies and appropriate actions to establish a control program or prevention”. And she concluded: “The action plans must be prepared using real information, so that their evaluation and subsequent adjustments can be effectively implemented.”

The theoretical sessions of the course ended with the master class by Eng. Carlos Caballero Montañez, specialist in poultry production, who emphasized “Alternatives to the growthpromoters (AGP) in poultry”. He highlighted concepts such as: probiotics, pronutrients, acids and biosecurity.

PRACTICE IN NECROSIAS

To finish the course, a practical class was held on the “Regulated methods in the realization of necropsies and dichotomous keys” developed by Dr. David Díez and Julia Pié of Biovet S.A. in collaboration with representatives of the Scientific University.

The course was organized by the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the Scientific University of the South (Cienfífica), located in Lima (Peru) and Biovet S.A., with the support of Adivet, Alquermes de México and Veterinaria Digital.
