Biovet S.A. 35 years of history: 1991-1993

Biovet S.A. Laboratories, manufacturer of natural additives for animal feed, turns 35 years. In this piece of news, we highlight the events that took place between 1991 and 1993. Among them, it is worth emphasizing: the opening of the first business delegations, the contribution in the creation of the Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia and the portfolio expansion in poultry, swine and ruminants.

The Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Catalonia was founded in 1991. This first stage was chaired by Dr. Miquel Luera Carbó and Dr. Borrell was nominated its vice president. Biovet actively participated in the creation and promotion of this new body and collaborates in the publications and activities of the institution.

In 1991, Biovet expanded towards other Spanish provinces and opened its first business delegations. Distributors were focused in a particular species, depending on the characteristics of the region. Thus, Canary Islands focused mainly on products aimed at poultry and goat; Valencia in poultry sector; Murcia in swine and Zaragoza in ruminants. Other subsidiaries, such as Tarragona, Valladolid or Lleida, worked on products addressed to all species, depending on market demand.

From the farm to the lab and from the lab to the farm

Thanks to field visits in these new commercial zones, the diagnoses and problems detected in the farms were directly transferred to the laboratory , allowing the development of products specific to these species. Example of it were:

• Alquerfeed Probiotico, natural replacement of the intestinal flora, composed of microorganisms of lactobacillus and saccharomyces species
• Alquerfeed Hidra: rehydrating treatment for high temperatures and febrile states that lead to fluid, minerals and energy loss.
• Alquerfeed Ovoponedoras: supplement composed of minerals and vitamins for the improvement of the eggshell in layers.
• Alquerfeed Lactorumiantes: aimed at bovine, ovine and caprine milk quality improvement by increasing the fat content.

In addition to the development of these products, Biovet also developed Alquermold in a premix form. This product was distributed to fish canning industries located in Galicia and Lanzarote. The product allowed the control of microorganism present in feed.

Business delegations participated in fairs, congresses and conferences in order to promote the company and its catalogue of products all over Spain.

In that sense, Dr. Jaime Borrell and Dr. Enrique Hernández participated in the 29th Poultry Symposium celebrated in Salamanca in June 1992. In this congress, they gave the conference ‘Probiotics in poultry’ which revolved around the mechanism of action of Alquerfeed Probiotico.

In 1993, Alquermold Premix was presented in Murcia. The conference was focused on pathogens’ control of toxic substances through the handling of materials and the processing of the feed.

The same year, Dr. Borrell travelled to Argentina to present the products of the company to different distributors in that country.
