Supplementation with Alquerfeed Antitox for the reduction of aflatoxin M1 in milk

Researcher at Iowa State University (USA), Emily Branstad, presented a scientific poster on “Supplementation with Alquerfeed Antitox for the reduction of aflatoxin M1 in milk and biomarkers of liver function in dairy cows”, at the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA), which took place June 24th-27th in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Department of Animal Sciences of the Iowa State University carried out this research that ended in April 2018. The study started from the hypothesis that “a diet supplementation with aluminosilicate clay (Alquerfeed Antitox) will reduce the concentrations of AFM1 in milk and will mitigate the inflammatory response induced by aflatoxins”.

This research, led by Drs. E.H. Branstad and H.A. Ramírez-Ramírez, concluded that the use of Alquerfeed Antitox is an effective strategy to mitigate aflatoxin contamination in dairy cows (27% lower concentration of AFM1 in milk, 28% reduction in the transfer rate, 35% less excretion) of AFM1 in milk). Also, “no harmful effects are found in the productive parameters before supplementation with Alquerfeed Antitox”, highlighted in the study.
