Biovet S.A. will present a poster about a natural preservative at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference

PhD. in Biology Cristina Latasa, from Biovet-Recombina, will present a poster at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, to be held in Saint Paul, Minnesota (USA), from September 15th to 18th, 2018. In particular, the poster will show an in vitro study of the “Use of Natural Alquermold to prevent the invasion of enterocytes of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV)”. The poster will show the results of the investigation on Sunday, September 16th, from 17:30 p.m. to 19:30 p.m.

The preservative Alquermold Natural manufactured and developed by Biovet S.A., is a natural biocide for raw material and compound feed, which combines the action of active principle of biological source, the cimenol ring with citric acid. For its part, Swine Epidemic Diarrhea has its origin in coronavirus, which causes a puke and diarrhea with mortalities up to 100% in sensitive piglets, less than 2 weeks of age.

The in vitro test highlights that the results of the absorbances and evaluations indicate that the treatment with Alquermold Natural at 1:1000 (1 kg/mT) significantly reduces the invasion of enterocytes by PEDV in vitro. In addition, they demonstrate that a 1:500 proportion of Alquermold Natural (2kg/mT) could be used as intensive shock treatment.

“Alquermold Natural is a strategy against PEDV, both in prevention and in shock treatment, since it is effective to prevent the invasion of enterocytes in vitro”, concluded the poster.

The research team members are: Dr. Carlos Domenech (Biovet S.A), PhD. Cristina Latasa (Recombina), Dr. Maria Peñas (Recombina), Dr. Júlia Pié, (Biovet S.A) and Dr. Anna Tesouro (Biovet S.A).

The Allen D. Leman Swine Conference is an annual educational event for the global swine industry for veterinarians specialized in the pig sector and other professionals who work in pig production and animal health management. “It is internationally acclaimed for bringing science-driven solutions to the complex challenges facing the industry.” according to the organization.
