However, this development has also increased the importance of maintaining an appropriate health status, as the occurrence of infectious diseases can seriously compromise farm productivity and profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birds are continuously exposed to numerous pathogens present in the environment. Viruses, bacteria and certain parasites can cause significant economic losses due to reduced growth, poorer feed conversion ratios, increased mortality or reduced egg production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, vaccination has become one of the most effective preventive tools for controlling many of the main diseases affecting the poultry sector. Its use allows the immune system to be stimulated before natural infection occurs, reducing the severity of pathological processes and limiting their impact on production results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, administering a vaccine does not in itself guarantee protection of the animals. The success of a vaccination program depends on multiple factors related to the vaccine, the animal, the pathogen and management conditions. Therefore, understanding how immunization works and which factors can compromise it is essential for optimizing health programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>How immunity develops after vaccination<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of a vaccine is to present components of the pathogen to the immune system safely, allowing the organism to generate specific defense mechanisms without developing the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following vaccination, immune cells recognize the antigens present in the vaccine and trigger an immune response that culminates in the production of antibodies and the generation of immune memory. Thanks to this process, when the bird subsequently comes into contact with the actual pathogen, its immune system is able to respond more quickly and effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the type of vaccine used, the immune response generated may be predominantly humoral, based on antibody production, or may also include a significant cellular response mediated by T lymphocytes. Both are essential to ensure adequate protection against numerous diseases of importance to the poultry sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intensity and duration of this response will depend on factors such as vaccine quality, the health and nutritional status of the birds, environmental conditions and correct implementation of the vaccination program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Main types of vaccines used in poultry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaccines used in poultry can be classified into different categories according to their composition and mechanism of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><u>Live vaccines:<\/u><\/strong> contain microorganisms capable of replicating in the vaccinated animal. In most cases, attenuated strains are used whose virulence has been reduced through different biotechnological procedures. These vaccines usually induce strong immune responses at both humoral and cellular levels and are therefore widely used against viral diseases such as infectious bronchitis, Newcastle disease or Gumboro disease. This group also includes some vaccines based on non-attenuated microorganisms, although their use is much more limited due to the potential risk associated with replication of the vaccine agent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Inactivated vaccines:<\/u><\/strong> contain microorganisms that have been inactivated by physical or chemical procedures, retaining their antigenic capacity while losing the ability to replicate. As they do not multiply in the organism, they generate less intense immune responses than live vaccines and usually require the use of adjuvants to enhance their efficacy. Their main advantages include a high level of safety, uniformity of the immune response and the absence of any risk of dissemination of the vaccine agent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><u>Vectored and recombinant vaccines:<\/u><\/strong> the development of new technologies has led to the emergence of vaccines based on viral vectors or recombinant genetic material. These vaccines use microorganisms or plasmids as vehicles to introduce genes encoding pathogen antigens. In this way, the vaccinated organism itself produces these antigens and triggers a specific immune response. Their ability to stimulate both humoral and cellular immunity simultaneously makes them highly promising tools for the future of poultry disease prevention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Routes of administration and their influence on the immune response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The efficacy of a vaccine does not depend solely on its formulation. The route of administration also plays a fundamental role in the quality of the immune response obtained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vaccination in drinking water<\/strong>: This is one of the most widely used techniques for administering live vaccines to large populations. It allows a large number of birds to be vaccinated quickly and economically, although strict control is required over factors such as water quality, temperature, cleanliness of the water lines and the absence of substances that could inactivate the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spray or aerosol vaccination<\/strong>: These techniques are particularly useful for stimulating local immunity in the respiratory tract. They are frequently used against respiratory diseases such as infectious bronchitis or Newcastle disease and allow large populations to be reached relatively easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parenteral vaccination<\/strong>: Administration by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection is used mainly with inactivated vaccines and certain live vaccines. Although it requires greater handling of the animals, it ensures that each bird receives the correct individual dose and produces highly uniform immune responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><u>In ovo<\/u><\/em> vaccination<\/strong>: <em>In ovo<\/em> vaccination is carried out during incubation, generally at around day 18 of embryonic development. This technique has become highly important in the prevention of diseases such as Marek&#8217;s disease or Gumboro disease, as it allows birds to be immunized before hatching and production processes to be optimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ocular instillation<\/strong>: Administration by eye drops remains one of the most precise methods for ensuring that each bird receives the vaccine dose and for obtaining rapid and consistent immune responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Evaluation of vaccination efficacy and the main causes of vaccination failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assessing vaccine efficacy is an essential tool for verifying that health programs are working correctly. The most common method of carrying out this assessment is to measure specific antibodies using serological tests. Among the available techniques, ELISA assays stand out for their simplicity, speed and high sample-processing capacity. These analyses make it possible to determine both the antibody level achieved and the uniformity of the response within a flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Periodic monitoring of serological titers facilitates the early detection of potential problems and allows vaccination programs to be adjusted when necessary. In addition to the quantity of antibodies produced, it is particularly important to assess the homogeneity of the immune response, as high variability within the same population may indicate deficiencies in vaccine administration or problems related to the health status of the birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaccination failure is considered to have occurred when a disease appears in correctly vaccinated animals because the protection generated has been insufficient. These failures can have multiple causes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Animal-related factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High levels of maternal antibodies can interfere with certain vaccines administered during the early stages of life, reducing their efficacy. Likewise, any immunosuppressive situation caused by disease, stress or nutritional deficiencies can limit the immune system\u2019s ability to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pathogen-related factors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The continuous genetic evolution of certain microorganisms can give rise to variants against which the available vaccines provide limited protection. Furthermore, excessively high infection pressure can overcome even an adequate immune response, favoring the occurrence of clinical outbreaks. Failures can also occur when animals are exposed to the pathogen before vaccine-induced immunity has fully developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Factors related to the vaccine and its administration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storage errors, interruption of the cold chain, the use of expired vaccines or incorrect product preparation can seriously compromise efficacy. Likewise, choosing an inappropriate route of administration, using an incorrect dose or achieving uneven distribution within the population can generate significant differences in the levels of protection achieved. For this reason, training the personnel responsible for vaccination is an essential element of any health program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Natural strategies to enhance the immune response: the role of pronutrients<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preventing vaccination failures requires an integrated approach combining appropriate vaccine selection, correct management and strengthening of the animals\u2019 immune capacity. In this sense, different nutritional and management strategies can help optimize the response obtained following vaccination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among these are <strong>immunostimulant pronutrients<\/strong>, natural molecules capable of modulating immune system activity, and promoting a more effective response to health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several studies have shown that their use alongside vaccination programs can increase antibody production and improve the protection obtained after immunization. In addition to enhancing the adaptive response induced by vaccines, these compounds help strengthen innate immunity mechanisms, increasing the birds\u2019 overall defense capacity against pathogens present in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This effect has been evaluated in several trials against the main diseases affecting poultry farms, such as infectious bronchitis (IBV), Gumboro disease (IBD) and Newcastle disease (ND). In a trial carried out in breeders, in which immunostimulant pronutrients were supplemented for 5 days before and 5 days after vaccination, it was observed that, <strong>thanks to the use of these natural active ingredients, antibody levels were between 22.41% and 45.15% higher for infectious bronchitis, between 43.46% and 78.95% higher for Gumboro disease, and between 23.49% and 40.45% higher against Newcastle disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"482\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-08-14-a-las-7.33.33-1.jpg\" alt=\"antibody titres\" class=\"wp-image-62859\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This higher antibody level also increases the percentage of animals protected against the diseases for which they are vaccinated, significantly reducing the risk of vaccination failure. It should also be noted that <strong>improved immunity has an impact on productive performance<\/strong>, with improvements in the main zootechnical parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-08-14-a-las-7.33.42-1.jpg\" alt=\"production performance results with immunostimulant pronutrients\" class=\"wp-image-62860\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Results of a trial carried out in broiler chickens in the European Union, showing a <strong>3.34% increase in weight, a 1.19% improvement in feed conversion and a 15.7% reduction in mortality<\/strong> thanks to the use of immunostimulant pronutrients<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Evaluation of the efficacy of immunostimulant pronutrients in increasing protection against Newcastle disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study was carried out to evaluate the ability of pronutrients to improve the response to vaccination against Newcastle disease (NDV) and their impact on zootechnical parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trial was carried out on a commercial farm with Ross 308 broilers, where 7 poultry houses served as the control group (131,480 birds) and 3 poultry houses as the pronutrient-supplemented group (56,200 birds), at a dose of 1 ml\/L in the drinking water from day 1 to day 10 and 0.5 ml\/L from day 11 to day 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease on days 10 and 23 of life with the La Sota strain, and antibody titers were measured between days 28 and 49 of the production cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, weight, feed conversion rate and mortality were evaluated at the end of the production cycle (day 42).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-08-14-a-las-7.33.50-1.jpg\" alt=\"average weekly weight\" class=\"wp-image-62861\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flock supplemented with immunostimulant pronutrients achieved a higher weekly weight in every week of the trial, as an improved immune status has an indirect positive impact on productive performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-08-14-a-las-7.34.00-1.jpg\" alt=\"production summary at day 42\" class=\"wp-image-62862\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pronutrient group achieved better weight, feed conversion ratio and mortality results at the end of the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"139\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-08-14-a-las-7.34.13-1.jpg\" alt=\"Average antibody titers against NDV.\" class=\"wp-image-62863\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group supplemented with immunostimulant pronutrients achieved higher antibody titers against NDV (+36%), providing greater protection against this disease, which is particularly prevalent at present, together with an improvement in production parameters (+3.34% in weight, +1.19% in feed conversion ratio and 15.7% lower mortality).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaccination remains essential for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/en\/producto\/alquernat-immuplus-p-and-l\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevention and control of the main poultry diseases<\/a><\/strong>. However, its efficacy depends on a range of factors, whether or not they are related to the vaccines themselves, which must always be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incorporation of complementary strategies aimed at improving the immune capacity of birds, such as the use of immunostimulant pronutrients, contributes significantly to maximizing the protection obtained with vaccines and supporting the achievement of optimal production parameters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vaccination as a cornerstone of poultry health Modern poultry production is characterized by high production efficiency and continuous improvement in zootechnical parameters.
