This article focuses on defining and finding a solution to\u00a0<b><strong>eggshell problems caused by a deficient calcium absorption in the digestive tract and heat stress.<\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><strong>A) CALCIUM (Ca) REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Layers\u2019 eggshells contain an average of 2 grams of calcium (that corresponds to the 8-10% of the total calcium weight in the organism).<\/p>\n<p>98% of the birds\u2019 calcium is in the bones, and the calcium supply to form the eggshell coming from the skeletal system depends on the diet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If diet\u2019s calcium level is &gt;3.65%: most of the eggshell Ca comes from the intestine.<\/li>\n<li>If diet\u2019s calcium level is &lt;3.6%: most of the eggshell Ca comes from the bones. For example, if the diet contains 1.95% of calcium, bones\u2019 contribution in the eggshell calcium will be around 30-40%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this reason, it is important to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supply the proper amount of calcium in the diet<\/li>\n<li>Make sure dietary calcium is absorbed (good status of the intestine)<\/li>\n<li>Make sure there is enough calcium stored in bones (minimize calcium excretion)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><b><strong>B) CALCIUM DEFICIENCY<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Calcium deficiency leads to an increase of broken eggs because of the bad quality of their eggshell and skeletal problems (cage layer fatigue).<\/p>\n<p>Layers can suffer from calcium deficiency, particularly in two situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><strong>Intestinal dysbiosis:<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0when there\u2019s an imbalance of the intestinal microbiota and intestinal cells (enterocytes) can be affected, or when there\u2019s an intestinal \u201coverload\u201d because the diets used for commercial breeds are highly concentrated.<\/li>\n<li><b><strong>Heat stress periods:<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0birds, to diminish their body temperature, increase the respiratory frequency (hyperventilation), which causes a reduction of the calcium stored in bones, since it is eliminated through the kidney.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The bird hyperventilates<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Eliminates CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>and increases O<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0levels in blood<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Low CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0levels\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0respiratory acidosis<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Low quantity of carbonates (\u201cC\u201d) in blood, carbonates are stored in bones<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The bird decomposes part of the bones to obtain carbonates<\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Calcium gets decomposed together with carbonates, and go to the circulatory system<\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Calcium level in blood increases<\/p>\n<p>8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Calcium is excreted through the kidney<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biovet-alquermes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/articlejulia-2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 200;\"><b><strong>C) AVOID CALCIUM DEFICIENCY<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 200;\"><b><strong>To increase calcium absorption in the intestine:\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>pronutrients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 200;\"><b><strong>a)<\/strong><\/b>To optimize the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa:\u00a0<b><strong>Alquernat Nebsui<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0<b><strong>Intestinal Conditioners<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 200;\"><b><strong>b)<\/strong><\/b>To optimize calcium absorption in enterocytes:\u00a0<b><strong>Alquernat Magacal<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0<b><strong>Promoters of mineral absorption<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 200;\"><b><strong>To avoid calcium excretion\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>due to hyperventilation:\u00a0<b><strong>Alquerfeed Ovoponedoras<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0<b><strong>carbonates<\/strong><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 200;\">By supplying carbonates, the bird won\u2019t decompose the bones during heat stress and will have enough calcium stored in its bones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple factors can affect the\u00a0eggshell quality,\u00a0and they\u2019re very diverse.
